Continuing Medical Insurance

cobra-benefitsThis federal law allows a person to continue medical insurance benefits when they are discharged from a company. This law applies to all private group health insurance plans. The law applies unless an employee is discharged for gross misconduct. It applies when a party gets a divorce from an insured employee.

Length of Coverage

If a person elects to be covered when there is a loss of employment, he or she is covered for 18 months. For all other situations, coverage continues for 36 months.
If an employee becomes disabled, they can extend their coverage for an additional 11 months.
